We are recruiting - Business Development Manager

Purpose: The New Business Development Manager is required to generate and close sales opportunities from a niche target market of apprenticeship training providers in the UK. 

Key Responsibilities will include

  • Working closely with the marketing team on lead generation campaigns and events
  • Accurately qualifying opportunites
  • Arrange product demonstrations to qualified opportunities
  • Working with potential clients to develop their return on Investment Business Case
  • Negotiating with Senior Managers to achieve the order

Achievement of agreed targets 

  • Take ownership of new business revenue targets       
  • Take ownership of client growth strategy

Growth of business in key product area

  • Responsible for identifying and closing new business opportunities within your region        
  • Responsible for working with marketing to create lead generation campaigns  

Team work

  • Demonstrates understanding of team roles and commitment to team decisions
  • Contributes fully as a team member, resolves conflict, builds appropriate relationships and networks
  • Keeps the line manager and Team fully informed about developments


  • Good analytical and written communication skills are required to produce business ROI strategies, sales proposal reports, record activity and  actions in the CRM

  • Understands own development needs and discusses with Manager.
  • Takes time to understand changes in the market and communicates to Managers/colleagues as appropriate  



  • Has a strong understanding of the business development sales process, has a record of having applied those principles and achieved consistent success

  • Is able to understand potential client needs and issues and articulate how Smart Assessor can offer a solution from their product and service portfolio with a clear ROI

Market Knowledge  

  • Understands the FE and apprenticeship based market. Is able to understand College/ FE structures, challenges and opportunities  
  • Can articulate the product features and competitive positioning of Smart Assessor and associated product/service wrap around
  •  Keeps up to date with Government and other sector information on curriculum, teaching and learning and structural trends 

PRIMARY LOCATIONS: Smart Assessor is a national company; you will be allocated a region that is most relevant to where you are based.  Some remote working may be acceptable.


  • At least 5 GCSE’s or equivalent required including Maths and English 
  • Previous experience of sales desired – should be able to produce evidence of previous sales development successes 
  • Previous knowledge of FE and education preferred 
  • At least basic computer skills including familiarity with Word and Excel 
  • Full/clean Driving Licence and car owner  

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, with flexitime and options to work remotely up to 80%.  

Rates: Negotiable
