It has been a fabulously exciting journey for me and my 3 co-founders Hilary, Danny and Aaron.Below are some of our key achievements:- Just over 2 years ago we launched our new e-portfolio software, now we have over 39,000 learners with 5,000 completions in Smart Assessor. Last weekend we moved into purpose built accommodation which we have designed and seen built from scratch.  We have just recruited our 20 th staff member. Our clients are consistently achieving better Ofsted results now t....

During the last 12 months we have seen the implementation of Minimum Contract Values which has led to a delivery model of prime contract holders sub contracting the delivery to independent training providers. Currently over 70% of delivery is sub contracted to the independent sector. Regardless of who has delivered the learning the prime contractor is legally responsible for the quality of sub contractor delivery. Like many of you I watched the Panorama programme unravel highlighting some of the....

In many ways it's been much easier for us to create a successful Start up because we have had the experience of creating a successful technology start up previously in the education market and attracting venture capital investment to grow and exit that business. Even so there have been many highlights in our first year and many frustrations too and this made me think about how I could help inspire our young generation of apprentices to think about starting their own business. I'm going to be off....

Internet Marketing Most of our enquiries have come through the web site. We made sure that we had optimised the web site for all of the major search engines and have been successful in only having to run small PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns, the majority of our web site visitors have found our site 'organically' through effective search engine optimisation. Having an interactive (web 2.0) web site helps with keeping visitors on the web site with many areas of the web site for them to visit, inclu....

I came over to do some market research and was surprised to find how similar our two nations vocational education system is with qualification frameworks, similar levels and structure and a strong focus on work based learning, especially for their apprentices.   The programme that my son is now qualified to facilitate is a 9 day leadership course for 14-16 year olds, the group instructors use a combination of facilitation and the outdoors to develop a strong sense of responsibility within t....

We feel here at Smart Assessor that if training providers accredited to deliver the Assessor Awards have chosen to use our e-portfolio then that is worthy endorsement indeed.Whilst we have a considerable advantage in the market place because we have been able to design our e-portfolio solution from scratch specifically for QCF, instead of having to adapt an existing technology, we have also been very proactive at continuously improving Smart Assessor based on client feedback.Often its not signif....

Indicate which assessors are less experienced and will need more sampling and interaction than those who fully qualified and more experienced. The sampling plan is created automatically based on which learners you assign to your sampling batch, the plan will indicate to you if you haven't selected all units across the plan or if you remove one of the units you have chosen as your standardisation unit for the plan. In addition the sampling plan will reveal what assessment methods have been used a....

It's always a difficult challenge balancing the caring nature of assessors against the profitability, and thus sustainability of training providers. It seems that many training providers are trying to reduce the cost of QCF delivery by increasing the number of learners each assessor is responsible for whilst reducing the amount of time they are on programme. As an impartial observer at Smart Assessor we can see it from both perspectives. Training Providers need to make sure they have a sustainable....

Software Enhancements One of our clients wanted to be able to have the facility to create a 'task' which is something that the learner needs to do such as carry out a health & safety audit of their workplace. They wanted to be able to assign performance criteria to this task so that if the task was successfully completed with appropriate evidence the assessor and learner would know which performance criteria the evidence needed to be mapped to. We thought this was a really good idea because ....

The current license we can offer clients to use our Smart Rooms restricted them to one assessor and one learner but under a fantastic new deal we are able to take of any restrictions on the number of learners that can come into a session with the assessor. This means that assessors can continue to review progress of their QCF learners but they can also deliver training to groups of learners at the same time at no extra cost. Often assessors are repeating the same training across many learners wh....

4 weeks from launching and 4 new clients already - what a remarkable success - far beyond where we expected to be! We knew when we launched our Smart Assessor e-portfolio that we had to offer you something very different from the current market offering; our research and instincts led us to develop our integrated Smart Training & Assessment rooms where you could interact with your learners without leaving your desk but never dreamt that there would be so much interest so quickly in this inno....

The fun thing about being the 'new kids on the block' is that we arent playing catch up with existing competitors. When you have created something new you can be innovative and bold. We know that we are being watched carefully now by our competitors who I am sure will be carefully working out where our new QCF e-portfolio solution is different from theirs and planning to catch up. This doesn’t matter and is flattering because when you are different and innovative you are never going to sta....

This week we exhibited at the e-assessment conference which was very well organised with good attendance. This was a great opportunity for Smart Assessor, as a new e-portfolio software provider, to start to get noticed in the NVQ / QCF delivery arena. We were invited to present at the conference and decided to make our key message about suppliers needing to make their technology products easy to use. I think by now we all accept that technology is a key part of learning and isn’t going to ....

Really exciting week! Now that we have completed the training for our first 2 clients we have lots of development ideas for Smart Assessor. How great to be able to develop the solution around clients suggestions instead of simply trying to second guess what they may want. We've commissioned an intensive 4 weeks of development around the new SFA requirements for the new contracts in April and also included some enhancements suggested by our Assessors such as annotations for evidence so that they c....

You can probably guess from this blog post being updated in the late hours of Sunday evening that the Smart Assessor start has been all consuming for the team here.Although we don't officially launch until the 30th March at the e-assessment conference we have already taken our first 2 orders this week both of whom have been trained using our Smart (virtual) training rooms. This has been especially convenient for our clients as their Assessors haven’t had to travel for the training and they....
