It was with a heavy heart that I listened to Chuka Umunna MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, state categorically at the AAC Conference today that if Labour won the next General Election they would completely abolish Level 2 apprenticeships. Apprenticeships would only be available for people who had 3 good A Levels and would be for a minimum of 2 years.ButThey would guarantee an apprenticeship for every school leaver who wanted one!  Quite where they will....

Whilst overall funding has been slashed by what could be as much as 24% for the next funding year 2015/16 the good news is that Apprenticeship funding has been protected. But for how long? With the employer reforms on the horizon this could be the best chance training providers and colleges have of certainty with apprenticeship funding.I would urge all providers with SFA allocations to make the most of this opportunity both in terms of prioritising apprenticeship delivery during the nex....

What great news that the Government are scrapping a controversial five-year rule that has put off “hundreds” of potential apprentices by forcing them to re-sit GCSEs they already have. New apprenticeship frameworks written after April 6 will no longer include the rule, which meant learners with English or maths GCSEs achieved more than five years before enrolment would have to re-sit them or take equivalent Functional Skills qualifications.I think that for many apprentices the p....

I was really interested to read the Sunday Times article onapprenticeships yesterday, which told the story of an entrepreneurial smallbusiness who recruits apprentices to bring fresh ideas to her company. I wasparticularly interested as the training provider is one of our Smart Assessore-portfolio clients and the spirit of the company resonated with our ownculture.Nick Boles, Skills Minister, was quoted as saying “We havejust over 10% of all employers providing apprenticeships. We need to ....

employers of apprentices who form an integral part of our company growth stragegy.By recruiting an apprentice into each of our teams they bring fresh energy and ideas because they are new to the world of work and have yet to learn that things can't be done or achieved. Their enthusiasm and energy is infectious and it is so satisfying to see them grow in knowlege and confidence during their 12 month apprenticeship. Each one that we have had has progressed afterwards to become a key team member con....

As with all successful marketing you need to step inside the shoes of the person you are targeting with your marketing, Companies don't buy goods and services, it's the people within those companies that take decisions and these are the people you need to connect with. Small business owners often set their company up because they feel passionate about doing something better or different from the way it's currently being done. Smart Assessor was set up because the founders felt tha....

An initial payment will be made two months after the individual has started their apprenticeship; the balance will be paid after the apprenticeship has been completed and the trainee has progressed into sustainable employment.Small businesses account for >80% employees in the private sector, most of whom employ less than 9 people. There are over 4 million small businesses in the UK and the majority have not taken on an apprentice thus far and therefore could be eligible for this grant. The cha....

Geoff Newman's article is below and can also be read here:-The apprenticeship recruitment process for a sought-after engineering trainee scheme in Yorkshire is proving to be a little more taxing than first thought, after 4,000 applicants put themselves forward for just 50 positions. The apprenticeship scheme at Ilkley-based building services firm N G Bailey has been inundated with applicants who are all seeking the benefits of the combined vocational and academic training that the jobs offe....

I'm wondering whether we are going to get companies in the Uk to take up the additional availability for apprentices? Reading through the Learning & Talent Survey published by the CIPD yesterday only a third surveyed planned to recruit apprentices and of those that did recuit most were from manufacturing and production with 63% recruiting at level 2. Do you think that the low take up for higher level apprentices and more sectors is due to the way the apprenticeship programme is marketed? Kat....
